Stand Fast

i was recently looking for my family crest and coat of arms. i found them unfortunatly they seem different on each web site but the moto was the same on then STAND FAST. does anyone know what STAND FAST might mean please. Cheers

'Fast' in this case means 'firm/secure', as in 'Fasten your shoelace' or 'Make the boat fast to the quay.' The meaning is, therefore, exactly as Heathfield explains above.
