...... thanks for the feedback smouse, it's always interesting to see final solutions.
So many of these homespun Quizzes have typos, out and out errors, ambiguous clues or clues that are simply weak!

"Ultimate do say" is a weak clue. In my opinion, NET does not mean "Ultimate" and are we to take "TLE" to sound like TELL (do say)?

The BARNOWL was a perfect answer, if only the letter L was the tenth letter of the alphabet! (out and out error)

Finally, I cannot see anything wrong with your answer "Quails" to the clue as given. (ambiguous clue?)

Any setter takes on a responsiblitiy to "get things right".

no I didnt like nettle really. I know it isnt an easy job to set these quizzes but if I hadnt got nettle wrong I would have been really upset by quail which has a perfect dictionary definition
Bit hard to decipher but I think the shortened body of water exclaims was meadow
What was the answer they wanted for 'shows fear' ?
Question Author
cows
It looks to me that the setter in this case is confusing the two words "cow" and "cower"!

cower (vi) to crouch or cringe in fear
cow (vt) to subdue the spirit of; to keep under

I have morally given myself the point so onwards and upwards - lol
smouse, I think your answer is much better, and theirs is frankly not right. You've certainly won a moral victory!
