Beauty is but skin deep.
As calm as a clock. (I'd never heard of it but it is listed as a 19th century proverb!)
Here today, gone tomorrow.
As Cool as a Cucumber
That's better, Valerie! So obvious, really. I'm amazed I didn't see that, once I'd written the first four words down. My version is contained in The Everyman Dictionary of Quotations and Proverbs.
Good Riddance to Bad Rubbish
Hi Quizmonster,
I have a few books on Quotations, but just wondered if you have any on Proverbs only that you could recommend. Thanks .
Val.
Dear Val, the book I mentioned above has about 100 pages devoted to proverbs - with about 40 per page - in alphabetical order. This makes it very handy for the sort of question we are dealing with here! It was compiled by D C Browning and its ISBN is 1 85152 0740. Cheers
Thanks for that Quizmonster, that's a good one for my christmas list.
Val.
Could the third one be
"Many the p......., few the c........" ?
possibly, but more likely one should " make the punishment fit the crime "
