my daughter has just turned 18 and for the last year she has been fainting. when these faints occur she gets sent home for saftey reasons ( she works in a hosp ). we asked her boss if she could change her 3 x 12 hour shifts to 8 hour shifts so she wouldnt be on her feet so long. this her boss agreed to and gave her 9 days in a row at 8hour shifts. i think this is against the law as no-one should work 9 days in a row. am i right ?
we have been to hospital for various tests and they are all clear. dr says its a phase she grew into and will grow out of.

Mavis if you look at the www.direct.gov.uk/employment it has the working hours. Unfortunately hospital workers seem to be exempt from the rules.

thank you for your reply. i had a look at www.direct.gov.uk/employment but i can only see trainee doctors bieng exempt and as she is a nursing auxiliary i dont think she would she fall into this, would she ?
I was in the rest breaks section, near the bottom.
I know its not really why youre asking but your daughter needs to take control of her health. Ive see what you are describing before and I have a strong suspicion that better nutrition could help. She needs to make sure she eats a diet which prepares her for her shift and carries a quick energy snack with her, like a cereal bar, to pep her up during her shift. 18 year olds sometimes eat all the wrong things and doctors are crap at giving nutritional advice.

I suggest she keeps a food diary for 2 weeks then pops in and shows it to a dietician at the hospital to see if they can help her.

Meanwhile, she needs to be sensible about what she does at work, engineering 5 minute sit-downs a few times during her shift . And if the job cant be changed she may need to look elsewhere in the health profession, like a care home.

Hope this helps.
