Isn't it just the hairs tangling together and sticking with dirt and natural oils? I have very long thick hair and if I don't reach all the hairs at the back of my head when combing it through they will start to mat together and I get 'mini-dreads' forming. When my ex-bf had his hair dreaded the chap just backcombed over and over again to make the hair more and more tangled and thus matted together.
To keep my ex's dreads tidy we used beeswax and friction

thanks, i thought that, but was wondering whether there was a specific substance that caused the hair to stick together, perhapse a component of the the hairs natural oil, perhaps this can be my 3rd year project at uni!! lol
I always thought it was dirt and grime and grease and maybe tarmac, because homeless people always seem to have dreadlocks!. Failing that I dont know. PS Anyone want their drive tarmacing or a subscription to the big issue?
hmm - there must be a diffrenec as well between eurasian and afro hair types...?
