Does anyone know why a friend of mine has become addicted to carrots (20 a day)? Its not a weight loss thing.

beta carotene.

i know a girl who turned orange/yellow because she ate too many. too much is not good for your system. there is something them that seems to dye the skin

Gingers often gorge themselves on them to join up their freckles. William of orange was an addict too..
Does the friend have floppy ears, big feet and a fluffy tail?

I was hoping for a serious response :-(
Here goes then, when I was a teenager I was into a healthy regime which bordered on obsession. Excercise and food intake were so important to me, like many teens. I actually think, looking back, I became addicted to carrots (go on, I don't mind the jokes!!) and my hands did turn yellow for a while. Fortunately I discovered booze, cigs and boys and it put a stop to all that nonsense.
I believe I have heard of a few cases where individuals have over-indulged on raw carrots and carrot juice and their skin has temporarily turned yellow. Too much would carotene would obviously not be a good idea and could possibly put a strain on organs such as liver or kidneys. Perhaps it's a case of your friend liking something crunchy to chew to reduce hunger pangs, in which case, celery, apples and white & red cabbage might be satisfactory alternatives, although the mind boggles at what would happen to her skin if she became addicted to red cabbage.

i was obsessed with bananas once, had about a bushel a day. I especially liked mini bananas that come from some asian countries. I think how it works is your body craves nutrients you may are lacking. although a bushel of bananas and a 20 a day carrot habit seems a bit more than necessary to satisfy your nutritional needs. hopefully she'll grow out of it before she turns orange.

well i know this is a little late to be posting a reply but i have the same issue as your friend but mine is with lettuce ... about two weeks ago it started...i will eat literally 2lbs of lettuce a day...( you know how you can buy those prepackaged bags of it) and its not like its spread out or anything, it gone within one or two sittings... and its not like my body lacks that, i am really lacking in iron (meats cheeses etc.) i don't know what is up with my new obsession with it i just love it...and now its a habit....we really have no explanation for it... bear with her for a little bit...try getting her to mix it up in some salad or do corned beef cabbage and carrots...find some way to intertwine it in dishes.

tigerthecat, well at least your friend won't suffer poor vision or lose her eye sight
The beta keratene within carrots can be addictive and studies have been conducted into the addictive nature of this. With an addiction to carrots, people may suffer similar withdrawal symptoms to stopping smoking, so it is thought that beta keratene contains similar properties.

Hope this helps, sorry its been a while since you posted the question.
