It's the symbol for voice mail. On the keyboard it is hot key (usually the 1 key) to take you to your voice mail, this needs to be set somewhere but if you buy a contract phone it's normally set to the voice maill number for the network.

If it's shown on screen it means you have a voice mail waiting.
