What Are Gristicks?

For context, I'm reading a book of 1970s articles by Jilly Cooper. The sentence is about adulterous couples "hiding behind the celery and gristicks" in restaurants 🤔

They'd need rather a lot of them and celery sticks to hide behind. Maybe they make big fans out of them. Very subtle!

I'm sure that TW has the right answer.  (I could picture the things in my mind but I didn't know what they're called).

Interestingly though (in my opinion, at least), the grissini that Italians actually call 'Gristicks' aren't as thin as regular grissini are:

the context you need for Jilly Cooper is that for uears she wrote pages of copy about her blissfully happy marriage
