I've nearly finished the Monkey Island series of games (brilliant!), can anyone suggest any others with the same blend of fantasy and challenge ? I don't want violent ones, but the sort where you collect things, have interesting conversations etc ?

TIA

Grim Fandango (if you can find it) is very similar to the Monkey Island games.
The Broken Sword games are also in a similar style, a new one has just been released as well.
Sadly this particular genre is dying out.
Loom springs to mind, but that's mentioned in Monkey Island 2 I think.
Grim Fandango rocks ...

Manny Calavera was the best game character ever, with his stilts & folding sickle ... ACE
I suppose the 'MYST' series would be ok ...
I liked some of the earlier final fanasy series of games (7-10), they are quite challenging and expansive. In fact i liked some of them again with years in between and weeks and entire days spent in fantasy land. The Broken sword series are good too yes, number 2 was particularly 'gripping', couldn't get past that goat!
Grim Fandango is realllllly good, you casn normally pic it up from your local games shop for about 3 also like mentioned by Llamatron Broken sword series are good 2!
try simon the sorcerer 1 and 2, although not as challenging still good
Grim Fangio is ok. Broken sword is in a very similar vein to monkey island in the game play sense. However, there are 3 games that are alot more similar than the ones already mentioned by everyone else.

Firstly there is the Day of the Tentical. These guys also made monkey island, and not only is it funny, but is one of the hardest point and click games i have ever played. It is extremly clever.

Secondaly there is Sam and Max hit the road. Also made by lucas arts i think. Where day of the tenticle is more focused towards diffuculty, this game is absolutly hillarious, ive never laughed so hard at a game, and its a puzzle one to boot that is quite tough in places.

Finally there is an absolute classic called Benieth the Steel Sky. this was actually made before the original monkey island games, but has the same blend of comedy and puzzles.

The first two are a must for any Monkey island fan!!!
you could try tomb raider the latest one, its excellent if you like things like that. bit violent, but you get to collect things.
Broken Sword 4 (Angel of Death) was released a couple of weeks ago on PC, and I am half way through. It is a classic game. If you haven't played any of the previous 3 you should as they are complete point and click heaven!

Have to agree with powerserver about Beneath a Steel Sky, it is an oldie but brilliant!
Highly recommend the Broken Sword series and if you want your head truly pickled you could try the Myst series.

Or you could join me on World Of Warcraft...........lol

Thanks for all the suggestions, which I am working through.

I found Broken Sword 1 + 2 in Virgin for 3.99 and it is exactly the sort of thing I am looking for !

Day of the Tentacle is my favourite Lucas Arts game.
Beneath a steel sky is available free.
There is a little known point and click graphic adventure called Touche, the adventures of the Fifth Musketeer which is worth looking out for.
