I'm sorry but posts like this infuriate me. Why tar a whole nation with a brush that probably Bush has caused? As an English race we abbreviate words and change the spelling but do we see complaints that foreigners have to spell the "British way"? To my mind they spell and speak phonetically and it makes sense to drop some vowels that we don't pronounce - like colour/color and so on.

Sulphate remains sulphate - to those over the pond its sulfate. We learn the other spelli8ng as they learn ours so why the outcry? We'll all get back to a more stable life when the warmonger has left presidency but I hate to see the Americans get blamed for everything (even as to how they spell) I bet the arabs and greeks and romans and the swahili all spell sulphate differently too!
it wont be the yanks,it will be the muslims
enough is enough,no more please , what makes you think you can get away with such a sweeping statement , norman. ?
This is the English language not American ,why should we take our language and bastardise it . English has been spoken for a lot longer than ''American''
If you want to spell it sulphate, then spell it sulphate, does it really matter?

Quite right nox. There's a load of people chatting about football in the sports section - I suggest you go and chastise them too. I mean what does football matter when there are children dying right?
I was always under the impression that the Americans spoke English, no such thing as American language, and as English is an evolving language, its forever changing, eg, English in Australia is different to English America, and so on.

Wouldn't like to comment on who takes over the world, but English is the international language, and the widest spoken, Manderin is the most spoken, take your pick.
I think you're worrying unduly answers2424.

The Americans have been spelling words differently from us for as long as I can remember, but I can't see why that would warrant them taking over the World!!!!

(I'd hazard a guess to who may though....)!
it's not the yanks I'm worried about, it's our rulers in Brussels..
latest EU diktat ....
English will be the official language of the EU., not German which was the other option.
As part of the negotiations, the UK government has agreed to change the spelling of a few words to ease the transition. This transition will take place over a period of five years, and will then be known as Euro-English.
In the first year, the "s" will replace the soft "c". This will please sivil servants.
The hard "c" will be replaced by "k". This should klear konfusion, and keyboards kan have one less letter.
In the sekond year there will be publik enthusiasm when the "ph" will be replased with "f"..this will make words like fotograf 20% shorter.
In year 3, publik akseptanse of the new spelling will reach the stage when more komplikated changes may be possible.
Governments will be able to enkourage the removal of double letters which have always ben a deterent to korrekt speling.
Everyone will agre that the horibl mes of the silent "e" in the language is disgracful and should be dropd.
By the 4th year, people wil be reseptiv to steps to replas "th" with "z" and "w" with "v".
During ze fifz year, ze unesesary "o" kan be dropd from vordz kontaining "ou" and after ze fifz yer ve vil hav a komon styl of language.
Zer vil be no mor difikult or vords zat kud be mizunderstud in ze EU.
Avter al zis, ve vil al be speaking ze zame language, az waz
ze dream in ze first plas.

Johnizere- I lyk it.

Answers2424- if anything, American economic and political power is in decline; the fact that Iraq and even Afghanistan have proven that, whilst America wasn't unstoppable before, they're very very fallible now. Look at it this way: if they can't sort out a medium-sized Arab state with backing from other countries, how would they take out China? Russia? The combined might of mainland Europe?
The american b'stards will be calling chips french fries before you know it, they need to be nuked before it's too late.
no, they actually passed a bill in their senate, changing the name french fries to freedom fries. now last month or so they passed another bill changing the name back to french fries as they are buddies with the french again. and being as britain are their partners, i don't imagine they'll get to upset about you calling them chips.
anyway i just watched v for vendetta the other night, and as nh and the movie suggests they are done! and it's you lot we have to worry about...
The United States is already economically past the point of no return - have a read here for an opinion which is pretty typical in many financial circles, as a country of power in the world it seems to be ''a dead man walking''

Well, we used to spell colour as 'color' before the conquest of the Normans where they wanted an 'Anglo-French' influence in the language. So who's correct? The American spelling or the British spelling?

Also, soccer (Association Football) was first used in Britain to distinguish it from 'rugby football'... so who's right there?

Funny thing this English language ain't it?
And 'fall' for 'autumn' is actually Elizabethan english -used in Shakespeare's day in this country.
