VW Golf running problems...

My high mileage Mk 2 (1990) GTi has a very sick engine...  It starts on first turn, but then dies immediately.  It can be kept running with lots of throttle (will run without dropping out above 4000rpm).  Behaviour improves a little when the engine is warm (at least there's less drama when it drops out at traffic lights it restarts more easily and will tolerate a more progressive driveaway).  The car will run generally OK at steady speeds (up to 80mph is fine)tho occasionally will misfire or hesitate up mild inclines, (oh, and the exhaust tailpipes seemed very hot after a longish run, despite OK water temp).  Air flow meter seems OK (resistance decreases with flap opening angle). Both fuel pumps are OK and fuel delivery after filter seems fine (at least on crank).  Fuel quality seems OK.  I've cleaned ECU contacts (& most other sensor connectors).  Spark OK... The injection system is Digifant 2 (I suspect the engine from a later car). Any ideas gratefully received!

The only time I had this sort of trouble, it was the cat. Has it got one?
