I have a very old sculptured plaster statue of Mary cradleing her son jesus christ as he was taken down from the cross, but years ago my sister decided to paint it, how can I get the paint off the statue without damaging the plaster and restore it back to its original state, cannot afford to have it proffessionally restored

What kind of paint?

it looks like gloss!
Well I'm currently stripping a fireplace (1930s) that I thought was cast iron but is actually some kind of plaster. I'm using a stripper called Nitromors which can go through loads of layers of paint at a time. It doesn't seem to be a problem with the plaster. I'd try it on a tiny area of the statue underneath where is won't show maybe to see if this works. It doesn't work on emaulsion though.
