Which is the furthest place from the UK if travelling by car (only channel tunnel allowed). You cannot put your car on a ship or a plane (just the channel tunnel train). All high passes/snowbound roads can be taken as passable if they have a road for a car.

Theoretically you could drive anywhere in Europe, Africa or Asia. If you went in winter and drove across the frozen Arctic Sea you could reach anywhere in the Americas as well.
Can we cross borders with impunity (and our car...)?
Using jenstars frozen sea (Bering straits?) I suppose you could get to the tip of South America.
not sure how you drive into Africa without getting your tyres wet, but you could probably drive to Vlaidvostok

JNO you could cross over into Africa on land by Egypt.

However the question did mention a road so any hard snow over the artic does not count as it does not have a purpose built road that can take my Nissan primera.

So by my reckoning the furthest point reacheable by my Nissan is either the eastern most point of the former soviet union or the southern most tip of Africa. Dont know which will be the most miles.
Just had a bit of fun on google earth following the roads as far as i could and i was supprised to see that you could actually drive all the way to Singapore. And Jenstar's theory
is also very possible aswell. wouldnt like to pay the fuel bill though lol.
by 2016 it will be possible to drive to America crossing from siberia to alaska and down through Canada.
is there some way across the Suez canal, Dom Tuk? I've also been google earthing and can't see one, but I haven't been there in person and don't know. Same question about the Panama canal for those planning an outing to Tierra del Fuego.
sorry Dom Tuk, just zoomed in more and there is indeed a road over the Suez canal
Question Author
right I am going to see the suez canal now on google earth
Question Author
sorry cant see any road over the suez
Question Author
Ahhh its the Ahmed Hamdi tunnel under the suez (wikipedia). JNO what road did you see on google earth??
Eldest sprog just been on google earth and says there are four roads over the Suez canal.
I definitely saw a bridge of some sort, Dom Tuk, but only one (and of course didn't spot a tunnel). Anyway, it looks as if you're clear to drive to Cape Town.
The Bridge of the Americas crosses the Panama canal at the Panama City (Pacific) end. They were building another bridge near the continental divide when I was there 3 years ago, but don't know if it is open yet.
Yep, the second bridge opened in 2004. Have a look here if you are interested. http://www.roadtraffic-technology.com/projects /puente/
so to answer your question Dom Tuk... Can't find any exact road distances but I'd say Singapore and Cape Town via Suez were both about 12,000km away. Tierra del Fuego much further (from Portland Maine alone it's 10,000km) but impracticable without snow chains on your tyres, whale repellent, iceberg melters etc.

Mates at work still insist that the eastern most tip of the former soviet union is further away than capetown or singapore. any views on that??
up by Alaska? I think it would depend on exactly where roads go - if there are any roads. I'm pretty sure you can get to Singapore by road, less sure about the Russian Far East
