45 cells is right, klazo - an 's' and an 'e' are shared by the item and two of the places.

Not really. I had answered so many of Matakari's questions (where he had provided most of the answers. I only made sense of the parsing to create the words to show the superfluous letters. I had so many of the answers, I thought I should give it a go to work out the end game to help him.

47 cells had me scratching my head for the last 2 hrs. Only to be shown how a stupid mistake of double counting a cell can really throw someone off. So thanks for clearing that up :-)

I know. I promised myself I would get the garden Summer ready today. Managed to cut the front and rear lawns and then got carried away with *** crosswords again !
Oh well, Hopefully the sun will be out tomorrow to continue. That is if the Speccie don't take me too long.

Thanks ProfessorMaisie and Klazo for enlightening me! My detective work has only just begun to find the iconic item. Thanks for the hints in this area, Klazo. I hope I get this solved before tomorrow's Spectator! Otherwise, I'll just give it a rest and tackle it again after Pabulum or Doc!

Eureka! I've got the iconic item as well as the other words associated with it.
But the five-letter one is in the plural in the grid. Great, I can hit the sack now and come back with a fresh head for the Spectator! Many thanks, all!
