N for North is that a way?
3 D An, another form of A, in the clue?
I'm notsure of def for nascent
Nascent means just developing. How does that fit?
Is it trial rather than trail?
14a set sail seems good, is the "a"
wrong?
Question Author
Hmmm yes agreed with definition for nascent and the A for set sail. Maybe need to go back to the drawing board here!

Thank you all!
This puzzle included the line -

"Four answers need an appropriate extra letter to form the entry"

The 'N' in this answer is one such letter, with the others being at 14a, 16a & 18d.

The 4 letters form a word that "The Week" might be concerned with.
Thanks, Lie-in King.
PS I'm not sure I like 'set sail' being listed as 7 letters, it looks odd.
Hi Never - that's not the answer. The relevant 4 answers are undefined.
Ah,thanks again, Lie-in King - obviously a more complicated puzzle than I'd thought!
Question Author
Thank you Lie-in King. I didn't realise the 4 answers were undefined but more importantly I had forgotten about the extra letter when I was struggling with these last two. Always read the question...

And now 14A is WASSAIL and I'm happy! Thank you all. x
Glad I could help :-)
Hi all, and L-iK in particular. I, too, originally thought the 4 extra letters formed a word that "The Week" might be concerned with but, on reflection, I think that the rationale for the letters being "appropriate" is their symmetrical position on the grid representing the four main points of the compass.
