Ok well i know this may seem somewhat an obvious question, but i would like to know people's thoughts.

I sat having my tea break at work today and said to a colleague how it was sad that someone had died in the great north run. He said well it was probably a dodgy heart and he had an attack, we all have our time to go and when our number is up thats it. I said well he must have been fit so surley he had a stronger heart.

He said no his heart would be weaker as it had to work harder all the time that this person was getting "fit".

So my question is twofold...Is there any point to a healthy lifestyle and lots of exercise if...

1. Your number is up and fate has a date and event waiting for you and

2. Exercise only makes the heart weaker ?

Until now i have not been a great belivfer in fate and think i should try to exercise lots to be good for my body?

ok you say exercise in moderation...so uis the body not designened to be an athlete?
Probably not (designed to be an athlete). In 'cavemen days' sometimes there would be days where no red meat was available so the 'hunter-gatherer' term is sort of a misnomer and really it was mostly like 'gatherer'...so lots of veggies doesn't equate to much energy I should think...therefore too much rigorous excercise would probably have exhausted early man. These are just presumptions but if you consider the fact that we now have an endless supply of all different food groups at our fingertips and no need to 'store' the energy for times of uncertainty, humans are more able to push their bodies to the limits. Whether this is natural or not is debatable but I would go for the moderate excercise & healthy eating as a way of life...not an obsessive mission to experiment with the shape and size of my body- that would probably put excess strain on the heart.
Firstly your heart is a muscle just like any other. The correct type/duration of exercise will increase it's strength if you have no heart problems and you train correctly and dont over do it your heart will become stronger. This is why long distance runners build up distance slowly. Problem's occur when people dont follow training guidlines and over do it. i.e dont build up in small steps. and not having rest periods between runs to allow for recoup time. A prime example was Jade Goody in the Londaon marathon who openly confessed not keeping to the trainig guide and eating junk food. Mind you her handicaps were were not just limited to being physical.
