Yes, I have starlings under the gutter above my bedroom. They nest there every spring but this year have decided to take up permanent residency. They do make a racket in the morning, it sounds as though they are clog dancing.
We always used to get swallows nesting under the eaves. Next door used to have them too and the hard nosed B used to push a broom handle out of her windows and knock them off, chicks and all.

I was thinking of blocking off the entry .

The space must be full of bird poo
If you're considering blocking off the birds' way in, Baz, you'll need to do it fairly soon (i.e. before the nesting season) in order to stay within the law:

I didn't know that
Most birds won't be nesting yet. Apart from pigeons and they are terrible parents.

You might have birds just roosting. Tits sneak in holes, starlings love roof spaces. Even birds just sat on the roof picking at moss is noisy.

We recently had a sparrowhawk take a pigeon off the roof - it sounded like a meteor had smashed thru the tiles.
