I realise that this probably won't get any responses, but it may help me feel a bit better.

My MIL has just accused me of theft!
She sent the husbands birthday cheque, and it has never arrived - she went to the bank and got a printout, and this morning rang him to rant down the phone that I have stolen his money! He explained that it never arrived, but she is now saying I have my own bank account and must have cashed it in there.

He says I should not let it upset me - but it does. Anyway, there we go, and I thought this Christ would be better than the last one.

Doesn't matter what you do, she is a vicious old witch who has never accepted you. You know you haven't nicked it; your hubby knows that too. What she thinks is irrelevant because it is clear that Mrs Reason and Mrs Rationality have long ago left the building. I wouldn't spend any further time worrying about her, or in fact try and persuade her otherwise. As you...

jesus - making sure the cheque is cashed is no 1 step in a quarrel such as this
Your husband must continue with that attitude to his mother Helen, if you have any peace from her .

Well yes Peter you would think so wouldn’t you!
Anne he feels a huge amount of guilt but har attitude to his illness last year really helped open his eyes.
The cheque hasn’t been cashed but the bank provided her with a printout?
How does that work?
Where is the actual cheque?
Question Author
Morning Naomi apologies I have only just seen your question.
The printout came from the cashpoint. She went into the bank yesterday to find out who had cashed the cheque. The cheque has not been cashed at all so is now cancelled.
I suspect that she saw a withdrawl for the same amount and added 2+2 and made 10.
So the bank never had the cheque at all? Where is it now then? Has it gone astray - or didn't she send it in the first place?
Question Author
Well she say's she sent it - so we can only assume its lost in the post
Dotty old bat - but at least it's sorted from your point of view.
Hi Helen. Just left you a message on Pasta post to me.
Late to the pass but just want to offer my best wishes to you, all I can do is repeat my previous advice of reminding yourself she is old, you will outlive her . Sadly some people are just bloody toxic and nothing can change that. She has bee out in her place so hopefully she will now ease off over Christmas. I have no conscience I would wish for her the same as I wish for my own mother. Those who only offer harm and bitterness are better not walking this Earth for their own sakes as well as everyone elses.
Question Author
Thank you Rowan - keep well and safe xx
Has she said sorry? It is the season of goodwill after all
Question Author
No Barry of course she hasn't!
At least she admitted she was wrong.
You'll never win with her, she will never admit to being wrong.

She must be an unhappy old git, no doubt some people will feel sorry for her. But her unhappiness is of her own making.

My mum died in 1996 and I miss her. But if she was still alive there is every chance that I would have murdered her by now.

Redhelen, forgive me for saying this but it is heartening to know that there was an upside to your husband's illness. I can only imagine the strain MIL's behaviour must put on the 2 of you and you have mentioned before that she treats her other daughter in law similarly. Renowned as I am for saying that human life is precious it is hard for me to imagine that many would truly be saddened to learn of her passing. What a dreadful epitaph would that be?

Lol choux I know what you mean.
She is a very lonely lady who has even complained the some Ukrainian refugees are taking to much of her friends time(the Ukrainian lady was very heavily pregnant) she just said as she survived WW2 she couldn’t understand the fuss!
