I've absolutely no idea why you can't get Ashampoo Burning Studio Free(that I know you've used before) to work for you, Henry. In my opinion, it's definitely the best freebie.
BurnAware Free is decent alternative though, as recommended by Piper107 above:

However, if you decide to give it a go, take great care when installing it to ensure that you ONLY install that program and NOT anything else that comes with it (or, say, a free trial of the Premium or Professional version). It's easy to get tricked into installing something you don't want!
