I looked at the wasp u suggested but it wasn't one of those. It was black, similar to a flying ant but larger and with one single orange band around its tail end. There also appeared to be a slightly bulbous sting.

I think you will need to search the Internet for pictures, many wasp type insects that could fall within that description.

It wasn't a bee, was it? I saw some honey-farming bees on the telly the other night and they looked more like jaspers! Not the furry, fat little bumblebees I imagined.
