Obviously the correct answer is to buy an original copy. This explains why the screen appears: http://www.mydigitallife.info/2006/04/26/disab le-and-remove-windows-genuine-advantage-notifi cations-nag-screen/

ahh silly. ive had this version on my pc for years though! i guess it should be a validated one, but i needed any copy to use when my old pc broke. thanks very much for your answer though!
if in doubt, dont install the windows genuine advantage tool. my version is real, but i have used an image program and formatted my hard drive before then used the image to reinstal windows. windows sees this as a non genuine version now. i had the star thing but i cant remember how i got rid of it. no real help but there you go
there is a wga removal tool at gigg-technology you can search for it on their site just download it and run
