What was the significance of feminists burning bras in the 70's?

I think bras represented females being bound up and packaged for male subjugation. Or something. It made an extremely entertaining photo, though.

Although it was an ultimate show of removing the male bondage and becoming free, it is definitely not something I would do - unless I really fancy a couple of bruised knee caps that is!
