surely not?

according to both the EU and UK, burning biomass is carbon neutral, and attracts huge subsidies as a result. so it must be good for the environment, right?

this is before any account is taken of the carbon footprint of transporting the stuff thousands of miles, and the 40+ years needed to regrow the trees.

We're not having our cranks yanked, are we?

//Besides, what is the point in their spending money on an advert? It's not as if we can choose to buy anything from them, is it?//

It's to signal how virtuous they are. "Look at us! No nasty coal in our boilers. Just good clean renewable wood." (Brackets: "Now don't moan when you get a hundred quid added to your leccy bill to pay to convert the rest of our boilers)."

What they should say, of course, is "No coal for our boilers. Just 150,000 tons a week of freshly felled trees, much of it from mature forests which are being ruthlessly cleared to meet our demand, crushed, pelleted and transported 5,000 miles (mainly by diesel powered machinery). Good job you've been forced to pay for it otherwise our plant would have been closed down along with all the other coal fired power station."
