what is an exparte application? in circumstances of a crown court hearing where he was just going for a plea and case.

Where only one of the parties is present/represented at the hearing.

Can be used in sensitive cases eg domestic violence.
Ex-parte means 'on behalf of', most commonly found in constitutional cases, where the state is suing or is being sued by an individual.
E.g.: R v Board of Governors of the Sheffield Hallam University ex parte Rowlett ...means The Crown (R) against the university who are acting on behalf of Mr/Ms Rowlett.
