The hard drive on my Dell Laptop has unfortunately bitten the dust and is outside warranty, i have been the searching the internet, but cannot find the exact same item to replace it with. its an 80gb, 4200rpm ATA/IDE drive, can i replace it with any 2.5 drive or does the specification have to be the same?

Thanks in advance for any advice given.

No it does not have to be exactly the same. But there are certain specs that do matter.
The only specs that matter are that it is not SATA, and that it is physically the correct size to fit in the case!
