I'm not sure if this is the correct category to put this query in, but as a birth certificate is a legal document it wins hands down out of the other categories.

In the very first column on the left of my birth certificate there is the number 442, my husband doesn't have one on his, what could this be? Does it signify that there was something out of the ordinary as I vaguely remember reading some time ago? Please help!

Could yours be a full certificate, and his the short form?

A full copy of a birth entry and includes particulars of the child, parentage and registration

A short birth certificate shows only the forename(s), surname, sex, date of birth and district of birth
It's the entry number in the General Records Office.
Perhaps his is a copy and yours is an original, maybe it was a human error when his was written out. The date the birth certificate was obtained is at the bottom of the form outside the columns.
