Hi, looking to buy new laptop. My old one is a HP Pavilion and it says it has 1.8TB of storage when I check it in settings. I paid around £400 for it a good while ago. When I look at the new ones it says most have much smaller storage at around 512GB. The one I have found with big amount says it is almost £2,400. Never paid much attention to storage when I bought old one but anyone got an idea why such a big difference in old to new.

Today's storage is more expensive than in the past normally because most 'hard drives' are now much faster and more reliable. They no longer have a spinning disk but are made from high-speed electronics, which is particularly expensive in the very large sizes.

Take a look at your existing system and see how much of the 1.8TB is being used. Probably no more than 300 GB. Unless you really need more than 512GB, just stick with that. Should you really need more, is it just for long-term storage? If so, buy a large external hard-disk and keep the long-term stuff there.
I'm not recommending this one but you can buy a cheap laptop with 2TB hd Amazon.com User Recommendation
I would never go back to having just a traditional hard drive in any my machines - I have SSD for Windows with an internal hard drive for everything ele. It means they boot up very quickly and run faster.
Now that the cost of SSD is falling I will replace the hard drive with bigger SSD over time.

You can buy a laptop with a smaller SSD for running windows and a large hard drive for storage at a reasonable cost, like this one Amazon.co.uk User Recommendation

Or this one has just the SSD but is 1TB https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/acer-aspire-5-a514-54-14-laptop-intel-core-i7-1-tb-ssd-silver-10212831-pdt.html

Hi, thanks for replies. Don't think I need too much storage as I have only used about 110gb since I had it. Just wondered why all the HP Pavilions now have so much less storage space than what I had years ago on my present one.

Maybe will look into getting the SSD type you say about.
Yes, definitely go for SSD. Not only are they much faster (Windows boots up in no time) they are quiet because they have no moving parts so the fan doesn't kick in.
