fighter planes escort commercial planes

On saturday the 12th, from my vantage point on the Old Kent Road, I saw about 4 or 5 commercial looking jets being excorted by figher planes over london... anyone know what was going to?

I had to pop into work briefly (in East London) on Saturday and had an excellent view from a 5 story building as they flew directly overhead. The fly-past was part of the Trooping the Colour ceremony (something to do with one of the queen's birthdays). I'm no expert on 'planes, but the first to fly past (and the one that caused me to look out of the window) was a Lockheed C-130 'Hercules', followed by, amongst others, an AWACS and a Nimrod, all under fighter escort. Don't know what the fighters were. It's the same thing with cars - "they all look the same nowadays".

ah my observation skills are obviously not up to scratch - not only had I not realised that the planes were not commercial jumbos but also hadn't noticed trooping of the colours oops... thanks for your help
