The best players BY FAR are iRiver, Creative and Rio...and probably in that order, i'd say. I'm not an iPod fan - they're overpriced, come with annoying software, and the build quality just isn't as good as the other three. I only say this because I spent bloody ages trying to decide what to go for! After reading loads of reviews, and playing around with each one in the stores, I ended up with a 40GB iRiver H-series and, later, a Rio Carbon 5GB. For 4-6GB range i'd definitely say go for the Carbon, or iRiver's H10, or maybe the Creative Zen Micro...they're all extremely good, so it all just really boils down to personal taste.
Hope this helps!
I'd recommend the Sony Walkman A-series. It comes in 6, 8 or 20GB versions. It looks really cool and the sound quality is superb. I had a lot of trouble with the software when I bought it in January but they've fixed that now. Make sure it comes with SonicStage v4, or download it and everything will work perfectly.
I had a Creative mp3 player (albeit with a smaller memory) and it was fantastic. Easy to use, never went wrong, great sound.
On the death of that I was talked into getting a Rio one which I honestly can't find fault with at all. Its so simple to use and compatible with Napster etc so dragging and dropping songs on to it are so easy. Hope you enjoy whatever you decide on. I couldnt live without mine! :-)
