My little mongrel is sleeping next to me on the sofa and he is gritting his teeth like a maniac. He does this often, any ideas why? Will it damage his teeth? Bless him, he is sleeping with his back paw on his muzzle!

The back teeth of dogs are like shears. I suspect your dog is not completely asleep and is 'sharpening' his pegs.
Hi, is he dreaming of chasing rabbits by any chance?!!Does he do it when he's awake or just when he's asleep? My lurcher dreams a lot, she even runs in her sleep, laid on her side flat out but legs are going like billiow, wonder if your dog is having good dreams too?
Probably dreaming and It probably won't damage his teeth. He probably is dreaming of chasing rabbits lala!
