Totally frustrating. I have a five-year-old device in perfect working order and still fit for purpose with the exception of the failing battery. Of course, it is a sealed unit but I have become quite adept at opening up various device to get at the battery.
Now the company no longer supplies the battery and there are no compatibles anywhere. They have offered me a discount off a new device.
Sorry, but I'll shop elsewhere.
Just a little rant

Fair enough.
It's frustrating, feeling powerless.
what device is it - hoow often is it used? I ask because i wonder how long you expect batteries to last for?
There are lots of places online and in the high street that will be able to replace your phone/tablet battery. Cheaper than buying a new one.
barry...Which? are already on the case. They have stopped recommending as "Best Buys" anything that doesn't have an easily replaceable (rechargeable) battery...and are campaigning for an end to this sort of built-in obsolescence.
Sunk...who said it was either a phone or tablet?

Sunk, I know you can buy batteries - I have changed batteries in tablets, phones, handheld game consoles and Sony eReaders. I cannot find a battery anywhere for this device and nor can the traders I have contacted. That is why I am so angry - a perfectly good device rendered useless for want of a cheap battery.

bednobs, it is an eReader that uses eInk and should not be a big battery drainer. When I first bought it, the device lasted for eight weeks or more between charges even though I use it every day for at least two hours. Now it lasts barely a day.

That's good news, ginge, but I'm unsure how much influence Which? has over developers and manufacturers.
barry...you'd be surprised at how influential they can be. It may take some time to filter down to actual retail products, but it'll get there eventually.

ginge, are you a Which? member? If so, can you tell which eReader they recommend - must have a backlight :D

douglas, you are quite the wag :D
i always find amazon bring out a new model just as my battery is dying :) co-incidence, hey I am on about my 5th kindle, and it never occurred to me they might be anything else but disposeable

The processors and the OS’s become obsolete long before the batteries die.
Replacing the batteries just mean you have a fully charged brick.
I replaced the battery in my 7 year old iPhone. But it won’t download iOS14, (I am on iOS12) and sites and apps are now failing.
Question Author
Kindles are no good to me for various reasons and sadly the devices I buy are much more expensive
Question Author
Sunk, that may be true of phones and tablets but my Sony eReader is 14 years old and still going strong (three battery replacements). I wish these were still being made, great bit of kit. My ancient handheld Nintendo still works fine with the replacement battery and original games.
If you really don't want a Kindle (3 of the 4 Best Buys), then the Kobo Forma is the other Best Buy...but pricey.
Sunk..there are so many things that have rechargeable batteries that could be used for much longer if batteries were replaceable...vacuums, razors, toothbrushes, LED torches, pressure washers, LED reading lamps...the list is increasing all the time.
Question Author
Thanks, Sunk, but my Sony is good for batteries. It is the Kobo that is kaput
Thanks, ginge
What's the model number of your eReader, Barry?
