Just made a passing refference to a thread in News about gay actors and thought about a passing conversation at work re: porn.
Anyone think that pornography is harmful?
Anyone think that pornography could actually be beneficial?

As a male (because I think that there may be a divide amongst the sexes on this topic)
I have watched loads of porn in life, both alone and with sexual partners.

At my age (54) its now an occassional diversion...take it or leave it... but when I was younger
it may have played a bigger part.

Some arguements against it are that viewers go on to commit rape, child abuse, see women as just sex objects etc.
Thats not my experience. Ive never wanted to rape a woman, abuse a child or just view a woman as a discardable pleasure just because I bought a 'Hustler' at 14 or viewed Pornhub vids recently.

LOL 237,
Not nowadays admitedly...
But its interesting how everyone has strayed from the question.
Is pornography harmful?
Yes, it can be harmful to some people and not others. Most porn is made my men, for men. I think there are far more women harmed by it than men.

So you let him keep his stash of porno books then?

And staring who?
Women!
Do they do it for nothing then?
Some do. You are only thinking of the western world where women can choose to go into that industry. There are parts of the world where women have no choice.
Nope, I gave them to his mum for her garage sale. Including the one with family photo faces

No Im not. Dont put words into my mouth 237.
You know full well that Im talking about legal porn not forced rape films or something similar.

Dont agree with that Tambo, thats mallicious, but it is funny...
Pornography is harmful in the same way that cigarettes and tobacco are harmful, and overeating, and driving too fast, and so on and so on.

It is absolutely not a 'yes' or 'no' answer because it is a complex phenomenon, driven, as are so many worldwide pleasures, by money, in amounts that make the Hollywood film industry look like one film student with a steadicam.

There is serious money to be made for the stars who manage to hit the career path that leads to that end - but of course at the other end are seriously exploited and abused people - there is no simple measure for everything.

I would never subscribe to the notion that pornography alone leads to the criminal activity and abuse that includes rape and child abuse.

Rape is not about sex it is about robbery with violence, and child abuse is about control and subversion - and both are driven by far deeper negative personality traits than those normally satisfied by basic pornography.

It is simply too wide and complex a situation to say that it is this, or that - life is rarely that simple.

Well, that a more full and thought out answer Andy, that I would have liked originally and perhaps been used as a springboard to a discussion.
Perhaps made the mistake of posting in CB??
You had some sensible answers from the start if you discard the odd comedy ones, you barely responded to some of them.

You may be right about Topic choosing but just lately almost anything gets posted in CB.
Question Author
On the one hand, its degrading because some people get forced into it and on the other hand someones son has a few Penthouse's under the duvet.

No discussion of the thousands of people who go into it willingly and make a good living out of it.
And perhaps of the needs it serves to people that actually (God forbid) like it!

TBF Mamy, they were few and far between. Just wanted to see which way it went first...
I'll remember next time to respond at the end and not the start then.
