With all this talk from Boris and company about Christmas and what they are going to do about it .Well I would say you or nobody can have any say whatsoever about changing Christmas .What you are talking about is overspending ,over indulging and missing the whole point of Christmas .Yes it’s a time of reflection and being thoughtful and remembering our loved ones so we will still have our Christmas as it is ment to be .

What is it meant to be weecalf, everyone will spend it as they fit. Some will go to church if they are open, many will not, some will enjoy their family time, many will not. Its not all an advert where everything is hunky dory. We hav been doing this since i was a kid, so nothing changed.

theland don;t see much has changed since i was little, Christmas was magical then seeing it through a childs eyes.

Children's eyes are easily blinded by tinsel, their hearts bought with presents. I would like to think as adults you see magic for what it is, just smoke and mirrors.

You can't beat an empty wallet and a TV screen full of grinning idiots punting garbage as 'the ultimate' whatever to remind you of the meaning of Christmas.

At least we'll be spared tousle-haired urchins leaping into swimming pools while their adoring 'parents' look on.

I am going to end this year with guilt opening presents where I couldn't reciprocate, I had to finally say no this year, I have outputted hand made things into cards, embroidered notebooks, book marks and coasters, which may well appear in charity shops in the new year. It is what it is until I get my state pension. 2½ years and counting.....

I know I keep posting this and I know its not great literature or a sacred writing but for me it encapsulates the true meaning of Christmas and of every other midwinter celebration. Even though most of us can't hug its particularly relevant this year.

Solstice is different, the return of the light and lengthening of days is worth celebrating, especially this year when along with light there is hope on the horizon.

Christians would argue that the birth of Jesus celebrates the return of the light in a different way.
