the framing square that can be seen on the lcd screen while I am preparing to take a piccie sometimes turns red ..........when a piccie is taken correctly it is green and it beeps at me to let me know I am doing things right and that I can continue to depress the shutter button.

what is the turning red thingie all about.....there is no mention of this in the manual.

ta muchly in advance for any help

A more specific answer may exist depending on the make/model of your camera.

In general, the red framing marks would indicate that the subject has not be focussed properly, so the shot should be recomposed before attempting to take the photo.
I would also assume that it's not in focus. For example you're trying to take a close-up picture of something and the lens is too close.
maybe too much movement? ie the camera shaking?
