i expect there are some moves that you shouldn't do - but which are which?

also does anyone know of any free sites where i can download routines of these to see if they are suitable and safe, before i start buying things.
i would be a beginner of course

I don't know how much help this will be as I can only comment as a participant . I now do Tai Chi and find it very relaxing and it certainly helps with aches and pains but how much it would benefit you would depend on the severity of your condition. For either Pilates or Tai Chi a qualified instructor should be prepared to talk this over with you and let you try a session first. I would not recommend trying it by yourself. Both sorts of courses are generally offered as part of most evening class programmes or you could ask at your GP surgery if they know of anyone. Good luck!
