Hey there JJ. Zooming is easy, just expand the screen like you would with a pic. I use my thumb and forefinger to zoom, but other digits are available.

As for the favourites on the front page, that's a nope. You can save them as favourites on your silk homepage, but that's as far as you can go.

ok - that's great Mozz - expanding the picture would never have occurred to me, my neighbour did say I can put my favourite sites into Bookmark.

Yeah, the bookmark. The three little dots, click bookmark, then "add to favourites". You add them to the Fire's front page, but you can add it to Silk's homepage.
