Tv Remote Not Working

Here's one for the TV techies. We have a Sony Bravia TV (admittedly quite old, but working OK), that we can't use the remote control for.

Up to yesterday, this TV was connected, and linked to a sky box, which made the remote defunct. We used always to turn the TV off at the power button, as turning it off with the sky remote turned the sky box off, and sometimes we couldn't get it back. This mode of use has served us for a good few years.

Today, we have a new TV, and moved the old one upstairs. We can switch the TV on with the power button as we have been doing, but the remote won't work. As this TV has never been tuned in to an aerial, as we don't have that facility downstairs, it now needs tuning. It doesn't seem possible to do this without using the remote.

We assumed it was the batteries, so replaced them with brand new ones. Still not working. I have noticed that the little red standby light is not lit, and wonder if this is the problem. But can't find a way to get this on. We've tried powering it off and on again, and the power source is fine.

This is not a smart TV, so can't use the i-players instead of aerial input. It's a perfectly good TV, has never had any issues at all before, but just don't know how to move forward from here.

Using the Sky remote, assuming you haven't reprogrammed it, press TV to set it to work a tv.

Now you should find that some of the buttons work different functions of the tv eg. the HELP button usually acts as the source button. Try them all until you find one that brings up a menu - once you have the menu you should be able to use the arrow keys to navigate the menus, and SELECT to ok options.
Tuvok.
I repeat the sky remote will only work with the tv on volume up/down and power on/off as they are the only buttons that work by infra red, the rest work by bluetooth.

It would seem that, yes, the sky remote will turn the tv on and off, and work the volume. I can get the source up from the top of the tv, but it doesn't help in finding the menu to retune.

I've pretty much tried everything else, yes the batteries are in the right way round, they are brand new. in fact i've tried two sets of brand new ones!!

At the moment it's just an annoyance as we rarely watch anything other than bbc channels upstairs. when the grand kids come to stay they watch other stuff now and again, but this isn't going to be an issue for some time to come, things being as they are.

I believe I once did have a remote that was supposed to work any tv, and it did, but yes, finding the right way into the retune menu can be challenging at the best of times, but when the instruction manual refers to the specific remote, it's less than helpful.

We definitely need a new sky remote anyway, so at the very least we can use the old one to change the volume, although it can be done from the buttons on the tv. Unlike many tv's these days, it also has an on/off button so don't actually need a remote for that.
99% sure it is a faulty tv remote
Bobnunton - I can't see anywhere that the OP has stated its a Sky Q remote.

My Sky HD remote brings up menus on the tv - hence my post.
Well perhaps the OP should give us some more information on his sky set up then as he has not confirmed or not that it is a sky Q.
That might help if he did.
God you cant help the helpless can you lol
You obviously have not got a sky Q system then Tivok
Anyway iloveglee there is a very simple answer to this just get yourself a new smart TV
For gods sake they are cheap enough
