When I went travelling I used Options Insurance who were very reasonable for a years cover. What cover you have depends on whether you intend to take part in any dangerous activities but they do a gold, silver and bronze premiuim so it's up to you!
I suggest you just shop around a bit, you can get some really cheap cover. im going for six months (to australia) in Jan and got cover for about 15 but that cover is pretty basic. go to STA travel, they usually get you good deals on things like that.
I'd go to Insure and Go, they're only on the internet.

Very good value and explains it all in plain english. Check for things like bungee-jumping (which I didn't have but thought I did, gulp) and sky-diving or anything that you think might take your fancy as it does when you're away.

Make sure your luggage is included both in travel and when you're bedded down at a hostel. Is unbelievable the amount of stories you hear of personal items going missing. Good luck
Go to Phil at STA travel Portsmouth, no contest! He is so well informed because he has done it himself and is so enthusiastic and gets great deals. He just saved me 200 on a 'round the world' ticket.
