To stop people crashing into you obviously.
I've often thought "I'll go stack into the back of that car in front" only to see the baby on board sticker and change my mind.
Problem is you have to get so close to see what it says that you're more likely to hit them anyway.

Or maybe it's just a warning that the driver is in training to be a school run mum and may do some very stupid things at any moment.
I totally agree ugly_bob - I noticed one on the road in front of me that was pale pink with white writing and I wasn't able to read it until we were stopped at lights and I was about 2 -3 feet from the other cars back bumper.

So I would say that some of them are there to attract other drivers to drive closer to the back bumper.

People will argue that they are useful in accidents where a child may have been thrown from the car - it alerts the people concerned to the fact that there was a child in the back but realistically this is not practical as people don't take them down when the child is not on board
just to confirm, as a paramedic it is the last thing I look for at an accident, as you can imagine there are always alot more pressing concerns, than trying to see if a baby on board sticker is prevalent, or for that matter if they had been to edinburgh zoo recently.
Thinking about it, perhaps if these people had less stickers on their windows they may be able to see out of them a bit better, and therefore avoid accidents?
Speaking as half of a couple who are unable to have children, I think it's to brag.
How about the following which might be more useful:

Driver often uses mobile phone

Caution - Litter is thrown from this vehicle

No signals - can't be bothered

Caution - breakfast being consumed

One I have often thought of making is:

Caution: Blind driver

You could take that one two ways.
You display a 'baby on board' sticker in the back window so that you can drive 3 feet away from the car in front, it seems.

Driving on M6 a few week ago and had a car in front of me with 1 of those signs in the back.

So the mother of this car is warning me to be careful around her vehicle yes?

Well anyway i move lanes to overtake her and what was she doing? She was typing out a txt message on her mobile.

Driving at 70mph on a busy motorway and she's sending a txt.
I see there are no answers from anyone who has one of these stupid signs in their car!

The origins of these signs started in Germany from a freak accident where the mother and father were unconcious after having an accident, They were taken to hospital and it was some time later that a baby was discovered uninjured in the rear of the car on the floor.

If the rescue services took these signs seriously they could be seriously injured are killed trying to rescue a non existant baby from a blazing car as most of the time these signs are displayed there is only the driver in the car.

As others have said here all the signs say is "I am a Moron keep clear"
I've always wondered why the people with these signs are usually the ones bombing along the motorway at 90mph. I can only assume it's so that no one can catch them to hurt their baby!

The signs I really hate are the bright pink "Babe on Board" signs, so tacky.
aha
'Babe on board'
Now there's a reason to crash.
hit the car, then offer them some 'comfort' ;-D
Re Toureman's post; I certainly go along with what he says. It might just make a slight difference if these signs were only stuck on the back of a car when there was actually a baby on board.

RE: Catso's answer, my mate used to think the rumble strip between the first lane and the hard shoulder on a dual carrigeway was meant for blind drivers...............
Adrums: You mean road signs but in braille?
No...read my reply properly
