In the early 80s, I was about 13 or 14 and we read a book in our English lesson that I cannot remember the name of and only part of the story. If I remember rightly, a man had something injected into him which I think came from a dead old persons brain that made him think he was in that persons body. Then he would walk around thinking he was in the past. I thought it was a Thomas Hardy book but none of the titles looks familiar nor any of the synopsis. Been googling nineteenth century science fiction but no joy. Any ideas anyone?

Definitely not Thomas Hardy. Try John Wyndham
Sounds more like HG Wells or Jules Verne type of thing...very early and very dark.
