What was the story behind Lilleth (is that the right spelling?) She was reputed to be the first wife of Adam - I can't remember any mention of her in the bible, and isn't she supposed to be very hairy? Where (if not from the OT) did this story originate?

The legends vary significantly, but they all essentially agree that Lilith left Adam because she did not want to submit to him. According to the legends, Lilith was an evil, wicked woman who committed adultery with Satan and produced a race of evil creatures. None of this is true. There is no Biblical basis whatsoever for these concepts. There is no one in the Bible named Lilith. Genesis chapter 1 does not record the creation of Lilith with Genesis chapter 2 recording the creation of Eve. Rather, Genesis chapter 2 is a "closer look" at the creation of Adam and Eve as recorded in Genesis chapter 1. The Bible specifically says that Adam and Eve were the first human beings ever created (Genesis 1:26-28; 2:18-25). This "Lilith" myth is popular in some radical feminist movements because Lilith is an example of a woman refusing to submit to male headship
a Sumerian demon; she's mentioned in Isaiah under another name.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lilith (this is pretty scholarly and boring, I'm afraid)
I have a triology of Hebrew myths and legends, and in the version I have its basically the same as granny says, she wouldn't be an obedient wife, so God made her the queen of the Demons, and replaced her with Eve, and the rest is history, or not.
Lilith exists in the Hebrew tradition, but not in the Christian Bible. (btw - she was cast as evil because she wanted to be on top during intercourse - the hussy)
Basically. Yes
she is a part of the rabbinical oral traditions in the Jewish faith. which was all that was available for most of the time the concept of Yawah, or Jehova or God as we know it has existed.
she was however left out of the Christian Old testament for one reason or another.
Just to add to what has previously been said, she is also depicted as the first Vampire, as she had a thing for eating babies.
Anyone familiar with the sitcom Fraser will recognise that his third wife who was jewish and called Lillith had more meaning and humour when viewed from this Jewish perspective.
Now if you really want a biblical mystery look up the strange creatures that lived along side men the 'Nephilim'. these do get a biblical reference or two, although curiously as Bill Hicks said why was there was never any mention of the dinosaurs in the bible?....
I have heard a song by genesis called ' lily white lilith' don't know much more.
