Does anyone think there’s much difference between a fresh and frozen turkey crown? Surely, you’d have to be a meat connoisseur to notice any difference in taste.

Auntpollygrey "woofgang -not true. I love turkey and usually get a frozen one if I can find one in the supermarkets during the year. I always get a fresh one from our village butcher for Xmas and there is a huge difference in the texture and taste. However, we often have a family buffet before Xmas and as I'm catering for a crowd I will use a frozen one. They are still nice but really not the same as a fresh one."

But that's not an identical comparison
Each to their own Polly but the moisture that comes out of frozen meat cannot be compared to fresh.

But hey...this can be your bee in your bonnet for this evening.

Thanks for all the input - a frozen one will be fine.

Barmaid - a crown is a present to myself and the kids. Whenever we’ve had a whole turkey himself always has the ‘bright’ idea to ‘pick the bones’ to badly reproduce some skanky, horrid meal that his mam used to make. The kids hate his cooking so they’ll be miserable and I’ll be stressed that they’re hungry. Much easier to shove the leftover meat in some rolls :)
What you need is a butcher in the family. I think my, now adult, cousins think that chickens have for breasts :-)
Sherrard. In that case go for crown. And you have no idea how much that made me laugh.
We have a frozen turkey crown every year, very nice indeed.
Ummmm -what's with my 'bee in a bonnet'. How childish. Its my opinion just like you have yours. What IS your problem?
No, I don’t think there’s much, if any, difference.
We always buy a ready basted frozen turkey, except for twice..once was an expensive fresh turkey from the local award winning butcher and no one noticed the difference. The other time we ‘treated’ ourselves to a goose, never again, cost a blooming fortune and had little edible meat.
I can never tell the difference, always used to taste the same to me whether fresh or frozen.
There's a big difference in taste and texture (and cost!) between a free-range bronze turkey and a frozen bog-standard one. Each to his own.

But if I buy the cheaper turkey I can get a bigger joint of ham - which we all prefer :)
What puts me off crowns is that someone has let some con merchant steal the best bits before selling the rest on.
If I was catering for a lot of children and adults I would probably go for the cheaper one. I'm catering for adults and foodie adults at that -and there is a VAST difference in taste and texture if you cook the bird correctly. If you cook the turkey badly its gonna taste dry whether its a kelly bronze or a frozen from Aldi.
