The dimlo I live with has put his van keys in the wash. The van won't open at the moment.

Has anyone done the same? Did the key work after drying out properly?

He has 4 people to pick up in the morning...

I'm probably behind the times here but my last two cars have just had regular keys. I can push a button to operate them remotely but if not I just put them in the lock and turn.
jno, the key won't disable the immobiliser to start the van though.
Where a set of keys I had went missing and was eventually found in a garden, having been soaked by the rain, it never stared the car. Luckily I had a spare. The dealer wanted to charge the same as a brand new key to check if it could be reprogrammed. Obviously that "offer" wasn't accepted.
I think my current car is the only one I've ever had with a spare key. Gawd only knows where they all go to!

I once left my car keys in a hotel. The only set! I turned the house upside down. I didn't think to phone the hotel because I hadn't driven there (door key was on the same keyring). They had them and sent them back to me for £5. I was happy with that :-)

I got spare door keys after that.

The key worked. He got to work OK. It didn't work for the drive home though. He's got the spare set now.
