My sister has a little boy who will be 3 in 2 months.
He speaks in garbled sentences which I can onlly just understand. They are quite simple sentences.
How does this compare with your average 3 year old's development? My Mum seems to think he is young for his age.

Thanks!

My four year old daughter used to be the same at that age, just babbling on and couldnt understand some things she was saying. Was a bit worried because my niece who is six months younger spoke quite plain. Once she started nursery she picked up, and now she dont stop talking.
Hi Scarlett....I wouldn't worry, tehy are all so very different at that age. There are abotu 20 or so kids at our mums and toddlers of abotu that 2.5 to 3.5 age bracket adn teh difference in tehir speech 9and toehr areas of development) are massive. it can depend on so many things (do they have older siblings, do they still have a dummy, are they out going or quite shy, etc etc). As swansgal says, it usually evens itself out at nursery, and by the time they start school, they are all more or less at the same stage of speech etc, with only one or two exceptions.
'scuse my spelling above, tried to review and it submitted instead. ho hum. xx
I wouldnt worry at all that sounds exactly like my little brother he was 4 in may but wasnt speaking hardly at 3 until he went to nursery and he has picked it all up in this last year he goes on and on and on lol! as "kick3m0n" says depends if they have siblings around theyre age who they copy etc i think thats why my brother was slower because im quite a lot older than him (21) and have been left home since he was 2.
dont worry scarlett not all kids are the same he will talk when hes ready,my little girls 2 and a half and shes been speaking since well before she was 2 and i dont mean the odd word full sentences, but my other two werent talking till they were nearly 3.
Hi scarlett, I am a trainee speech and language therapist. At this age a child would have around 900-1000 words in their vocabulary, they will be able to understand simple scentences and carry out instructions. Verbs ushally prodominate and plurals and past tense will start to be used. They should also be starting to use prepositions such as in and out. Generally 3 word scentences are the typical development stage they should be at, such as "teddy in bed" "teddy drink tea". If you are in any doubt speech and language therapists can be seen on the NHS, they will do an initial assessment which will determine if there is a slight delay, and then therapy can be advised or asministered. Other than that you can contact your local sure start clinic (you may get seen quicker). It doesnt hurt to get a professional opinion, and speech therapists are lovely non-scary people!! Hope this helps, all the best x
