Thought it best to put this question on both arts & lit and tv & film. Im writing an assignment on the tv show 'absolutely fabulous' and how it reflects 1990's culture, society and ideologies. However im struggeling to find ANY info on the decades culture etc. All im finding on the net is timelines and overviews. Can anyone suggest some websites that analyse the decade and give in-depth info on movements, polotics etc. Any suggestions at all would be great Thanx!!! : )

The strongest thoughts are the end of thatcherite britain, leading to the demise of conservatives and the emergence of new labour begun by john smith described as the greatest primeminister we never had, try political party websites, just some ideas, lot of unemployment and business failures, remembered there is a book called the peoples century in photos and text year by year
Culture wise the show was a comic characterisation of the new emerging media industry and the celebration of celebrity .
it poked fun at the sloane ranger type of the decade popularised by lady Dians Spencer and her crowd
I'm not trying to diss your assignment at all, but I just wonder if AbFab is a bit one- dimensional for an assignment like this? It's really only media, fashion and consumption that the series satirised and its real bite came from strong acting and characterisation. And apart from the fashion, surely AbFAb is fairly timeless and could be set anywhere from 1980s onwards?
Also I don't know that there are many websites that will analyse political movements of the 1990s in great depth.... You might have to read books. After all, the 90s saw the demise of Thatcherism and the rise of New Labour... It also saw recession in the early 90s. It's not an easy decade to characterise politically.
Like I say tho, I'm not trying to criticise you, just give an honest response to your question.
BTW clown, John Smith is turning in his grave for being described in your post as 'new Labour'!
I think Ab fab was more to do with the emptiness of life when you are that wealthy or from that background. Not everyone obviously. Their God/Gods are Vercace...darling and Chanel etc; their family is strangers with lots of money...they have nothing really but ..looking good in the right clothes (for that week) you can see them today in Belgravia, stupidly wealthy wives of the rich driving from shop to shop with their chauffeurs (showfuz) sitting in the windows of divine littles restaurants spangled up to the eyeballs in the real thing....day after day...same place same group of equally hideous, tango tanned, leathery ladies, bless them, for they have nothing. There husbands are doing deals in Cannes and leave em for weeks on end with their Phillipino housekeepers. Its about emptiness. We live in a far wealthier society and its not always that much fun.
