Chris, the record company (was it Columbia?) just wanted to give it a title that Americans would recognise and that was the only Japanese word anyone had ever heard of.

The first time I heard the German version of "Lilly Marleen", which was a popular song of both the allies and the axis during WW2, I was really impressed. It just sounded more haunting and emotive than the English version:

There's an old comedy called Desert Mice in which Sid James hears the song in German while he's in the desert with Ensa and tries out several different possible English versions - quite clever.
Jno, any chance of posting a clip of that scene in that movie, I'd like to see it.

I've never seen even a clip of it online, sanmac, but I think it turns up on Talking Pictures TV occasionally. Seemingly just a cheap British comedy but I've managed to remember bits of it for 50 years and more.
