me again! - having looked at various websites for accommodation in new york the whole tax thing is confusing me - i have looked at expedia and found a suitable hotel - the bookings page says it includes tax & service fees but then in small writing says it doesnt include incidentals & surcharges payable to the hotel - i get the incidentals but what surcharges are they talking about?

I don't think that you need to bother too much about this. I think that Expedia are just covering themselves by pointing out that their prices don't include incidentals (such as phone calls, drinks at the bar, etc) and surcharges (such as any claim for damages the hotel might make if you trash the room or for things which you might demand, e.g. a room with a view, which wasn't in your original booking contract).

I totally agree. You will only be liable for surcharges at the hotel if you happen to trash the room ....dont worry about this.
