Does anybody really pay all that money for the latest albums anymore?

The last album I bought was By The Way ...RHCP ...

Loada cr^p, so I vowed never to buy any music ever again ...

My MP3 collection now sits at over 33,000 ...

What do you prefer ...shop bought, or download for free?

i dont buy in shops.i am quite happy to wait a few days and get a cd for 9 rather than pay shop prices.every 5 or 6 cd's you basically get 1 free.
They are getting cheaper, alot cheaper these days. Nothing sounds better than vinyl - I love it, I am too young to have had any as a kid so I collect it now and that crackling just adds to the feel. I own alot of mp3s too but I will never ever stop buying cd's and vinyl.
If you look around at the bigger record shops you will see that single disc albums cost around about 8 - 10 now rather than the 13.99 they used to be.

But even 9 or 10 is still way too high for a CD ...
I think downloads are the way to go. I use a site in America where you can download the latest albums for 99c and when the exchange rate is good this costs next to nothing, is legal, and you are not tied to the site.
Warning!! radical answer ahead!!!!!!
I agree that cds are expensive, and I often download just the tunes I've heard on the radio or single tracks I like - but if everyone stopped buying cds and paying for downloads where would we get the investment for new bands, original music and fresh ideas from?
The recording companies all cry about cost and investment in new groups etc, but how many times do we see them back new bands that have no track record? If these bands disappear without a trace the investment is lost. There is already a huge gap between what we pay for a cd and what the artiste ends up with because the recording companies want to claw back all they can from those artistes that make them money. Free shareware sites are adding to this problem. The question we need to ask ourselves is do we want new fresh, original material, or are we happy to kill off the recording industry so that all we are left with is reworkings of old material and greatest hits compilations from 30 years ago. Before you ask - no I don't work for a recording company and, yes, I do play in a band.
My CD player doesn't play CD-Rs so I tend to have to buy originals. I do object to the rip off merchants that are the record industry though and think they deserve to suffer for a while (they won't, they'll get theirs by hook or by crook, don't you worry).
I'd be interested to know the free download sites; I have tried but my computer is very slow and I keep getting frustrated. Ta
