Car Keys

Last night, one of my neighbours had their car broken into. From the car they were able to unlock the electronic garage doors and thereupon stole a case of wine.

His car keys were in the house. How does this work, and how did they access the garage?

I keep a garage remote in my car but since we have had a few attempted garage break ins locally, I have plugged my garage door electric plugs, which are in the rafters, into remote control units which plug into the mains then you plug the power cord into them. I keep the power turned off when I don't want to open the front doors.OK its not foolproof, you could still turn the power on remotely, but you'd need to know that you needed to and be blooming close to do it. I tested the remote and it doesn't operate through the closed metal doors, I have to go in through the side door to operate it. Not that there is anything worth nicking except maybe the contents of the freezer.
that would be a bit heavy to wear OG?

Could these scanner thingies have access to burglar alarm wi-fi access codes, at all?
Yes.
Wow if I'd been burgled just before Christmas and then had my car and garage broken into mid-January I'd be looking to move. How awful for them.
This sort of theft is a well-known risk with "keyless entry and go" cars.
Owners should be aware of the problem and store their keys in a Faraday bag/box .
The latest technology actually disables the keyless function when the key hasn't been moved for a short while...so, leaving the key for a while means that these "relaying" thefts can't happen - no signal from the key, until it's moved again.
