My Samsung LCD TV is around 5 years old now, and I have recently become interested in watching American films and docus. and find the sound is appalling! or it`s my hearing at fault. I`ve tried adjusting the available features but the sound still comes out as variable, in volume and clarity. I`ve looked at the various options ( by using the `ask` option of this site, but cannot find an opinion newer than 10 years ago) to buy a device to improve things, but really do not understand what they all mean.

Perhaps somebody could suggest a device which would help. Thanks in anticipation.

Desktop speakers connected with 3.5 mm audio jack cable would work and be cheap

I use subtitles when available, if I am having a problem with sound on TV.
Becuase we all have flat TVS nowadays there is little room for speakers so the sound is often poor on modern TVs.

You can buy a "Sound Bar" that plugs in to the TV to give better sound (but as I have never bought one I cannot give any advice)

Note however some a VERY expensive.

We have a sound bar and it makes no difference to normal speech - just makes the house rumble like a cinema during films with a noisy soundtrack
Unfortunately, inexpensive soundbars/soundbases can sound worse than the original TV sound. Some soundbars can be much more expensive than a new (big screen) TV. I bought a Yamaha soundbar some years ago and have been very pleased with it....controls to adjust treble and bass to your liking, and a button labelled "clear speech" which does actually work!
Clear voice ?
Which one do you have ?

Hello All

Hi Margarettom, yes I use subtitles as well, but by the time I`ve read `em the action`s moved on! (might as well just read a book!).
Hello Old Geezer, It sounds like you`re thinking of the right set, as it`s got clear voice, movie, standard, music, and amplify but none are very clear especially when the set is on a USA channel, who might as well be talking in Russian its so hard to understand! Moany old git aren`t I ! See above, by the time I`ve worked out what has been said, they`ve said something else and I`ve missed it! I must be getting very old, not just old according to my Grand -Daughter.
You appear to have ignored the best answer.

As Prudie says a soundbar takes over your room and even a documentary sounds like a Die Hard film.
I've got a similar aged Samsung LCD TV.
I found that setting my TV sound preferences to 'Music' helps improve the sound around speech in general for most programmes.
My normal level for watching TV is 12 for most channels but find that I have to turn up the volume to 15 for Channel 4 as the soundtrack always seems very quiet.
Just find a setting that you find improves the speech for you but if you have to turn up the volume, then do just that, but remember turn it down again when you change back to another channel.
